Thermodynamics Engineer

  • Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
  • Full-Time
  • On-Site

Job Description:

We are hiring a Thermodynamics Engineer for a leading water-generation technology company based in Abu Dhabi. This role is critical to owning the thermodynamic performance of Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) products, combining advanced modelling with hands-on laboratory validation and high-quality technical documentation.

Role Purpose

Own, model, optimise, and validate refrigeration and heat-exchange systems to maximise dehumidification efficiency and water yield under UAE climate conditions. The role bridges simulation and real-world testing while producing audit-ready engineering documentation to support design decisions, production readiness, and certifications.

Key Responsibilities

Thermodynamic & Refrigeration Engineering

  • Model and optimise refrigeration cycles for dehumidification and water yield (psychrometrics, COP, heat loads).

  • Define performance targets and operating envelopes suitable for harsh UAE environmental conditions.

  • Support selection and specification of compressors, heat exchangers, expansion devices, fans, and refrigerants.

Simulation, Prototyping & Validation

  • Develop and maintain simulation models (EES, MATLAB, ANSYS or similar) and correlate results with lab data.

  • Plan and execute laboratory testing, including instrumentation, test procedures, data analysis, and DOE.

  • Drive improvements in capacity, energy efficiency, water output, and system reliability.

Technical Documentation (High Ownership)

  • Produce technical specifications, performance reports, test reports, and design notes.

  • Develop installation, operation, and troubleshooting documentation in collaboration with operations/service teams.

  • Provide engineering evidence to support compliance and certification activities.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with mechanical and electronics engineers to align airflow, controls, and thermal performance.

  • Support field investigations where thermodynamic performance is impacted by environment, usage, or maintenance.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical / Thermal Engineering or related field (Masters preferred).

  • 3–10 years experience in HVAC, refrigeration, dehumidification, or thermal product development.

  • Proven experience in lab validation, performance testing, and technical documentation.

Core Skills

  • Refrigeration cycle analysis, psychrometrics, heat transfer, airflow, and pressure-drop fundamentals.

  • Simulation and modelling (EES, MATLAB, ANSYS or equivalent) with strong test-correlation discipline.

  • Lab testing & instrumentation (temperature, humidity, pressure, flow).

  • Clear, structured technical writing suitable for audits and cross-functional teams.

  • Practical product mindset balancing performance, cost, manufacturability, and reliability.

Key Challenges

  • Optimising COP and water yield in high heat, humidity, dust, and variable load conditions.

  • Scaling designs across multiple product capacities.

  • Managing condensate and frost behaviour for stable long-term operation.

  • Translating complex thermodynamics into practical, buildable design requirements.
